Prof. J.Ph. Vogel

 

Professor Jean Philippe Vogel (1871-1958) was Sanskritist and archeologist.

 

He travelled across India between 1899 and 1914, where he was appointed as superintendent of the ‘Northern Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India’. Later (1910-1912), he obtained the position of acting director-general of archaeology for the entire South Asian subcontinent. He published many articles and books, and between 1926 and 1935 he worked on the Annual Bibliography of Indian Archaeology (ABIA).

 

In 1924, Vogel established the Institute Kern and made it into an international centre for the study of Indian art and archeology.
